The liver, things you really should know

What it does

Your liver is the sorting office for the body. It’s responsible for cleaning toxins and waste from your blood, and separating out the useful nutrients to synthesize hundreds of biochemicals that your body needs for daily functioning. Your liver also activates and regulates important hormones.

Why is this important?

Well, what happens when the sorting office gets clogged up? If your liver cannot handle the excess fat, sugar and toxins coming at it, then fat, sugar and toxins will pile up in all the wrong places all over your body – hardening your arteries and wreaking havoc all over generally. Did you know when the liver filters your blood after you eat; it converts the leftover glucose into glycogen and stores it for future energy needs. Your liver quickly changes the glycogen back into glucose when you need a quick burst of energy, sending it out into circulation once more to feed your cells. It also detoxifies your blood getting rid of any unwanted or excess chemicals, so when you punish your liver by consuming a large amount of toxins things start to pile up, particularly fat, as it starts to lose the ability to process fats. It also struggles to get rid of other excess chemicals like oestrogen, which is a major player in the storage of abdominal fat. When your liver is clogged with fat, it has difficulty breaking down fat to use as fuel. Your liver and white adipose tissue are constantly breaking down and restoring fat (triglycerides). The problem is that once the liver is clogged then the process becomes imbalanced and tilts more toward fat storage than fat break down.  This is reflected by elevated triglycerides in your blood poor cholesterol levels and low energy in general. If allowed to go on for too long this will also start to cause insulin de-sensitivity which will only cause more issues and more damage to the arteries among other areas of the body, in short the whole body starts to be effected in a knock on effect.

What can I do?

There are very easy ways to look after and ensure your liver stays clear and healthy, even if you are already suffering from a clogged up liver these small things can make a huge difference and even reverse the damage. Did you know the liver is the only organ in the body that can regenerate itself and there are ways to help it along, here are a few things to keep a healthy liver. The top three are a must.

  • Milk thistle
  • Selenium
  • Turmeric
  • Flax seed oil
  • Vitamin B complex (particularly b-6, 9, 12)
  • Magnesium
  • Green tea (the hot water will also aid digestion)

All of these have multiple and great effects for the body and I’d suggest adding them all to your staple diet.
